Why East Anglia?
With London becoming ever more complicated and stressful to film in (scarcity of unit bases, mountains of paperwork, extended lead times for permits, a general weariness to crews), combined with an industry wide drive to proactively reduce the damage we create on our planet primarily through excessive travel and flights, East Anglia is fast becoming a popular location for productions of all shapes and sizes.
From The Theory of Everything, Red Joan and even Pirates Of The Caribbean in Central Cambridge, to The King’s Speech in Ely (using the Cathedral as a match for Westminster Cathedral), the Norfolk Broads masquerading as North Korean Paddy Fields in James Bond Die Another Day, perfectly preserved Lavenham providing several backdrops in the Harry Potter films, to Shakespeare in Love & All The King’s Men in Holkham on the Norfolk Coast. Feedback from Producers having based their crews in the area is overwhelmingly positive.
The councils in the region are very film friendly not requiring licenses to shoot in many areas, and many of the facilities services we use in London are actually based north of the city (where there is space for them!) so there is no problem assembling the provisions we depend on for a smooth and successful shoot.
Many of the towns and villages in the area offer streets that match London, in addition there are rivers & canals, rolling hills, bustling market towns, miles of beautiful beaches, thatched cottages, vineyards, tulip sunflower & lavender fields, tanks & trenches, forests, orchards, farms, beautiful roads, airfields, striking modern architecture…the list goes on. Check out our location moodboards for a flavour and get in touch if you see anything you like!
Weather Worries?
The climate of East Anglia is generally dry and mild, making it a fairly safe bet for shooting outdoors. The region is among the driest in the United Kingdom with many areas receiving less than 700mm of rainfall a year.
In fact Osyth, a village of 4,000 near Clacton-on-Sea, receives a mere 513mm of rain a year on average, making it a contender for the driest place in Britain. And Norwich beats London in to the top 10 sunniest cities in the UK list averaging 1610 hours of sunshine per year.
We certainly can’t compete with Cape Town…but then again we don’t have the power cuts, and that is a loooong flight…. :)
